First 1,600 MW (800 MW x 2) pithead thermal power project by Mahanadi Coalfields worth of Rs. 11,000 crore approved by Coal India management. It also cleared five other mining projects which would add 30 million tonnes of coal to its current capacity generation of coal.
Mahanadi Coalfields power project is located in the Sundergarh district of Odisha, is the first pithead thermal power project of Coal India Ltd (CIL) and expected to be operational in next three years.
The project was delayed due to issues as land acquisition, environment and forest clearances. Now the plant would source coal from the company’s Basundhara coal mines.
