The Somerset School Committee voted in favor of Borrego Solar of Lowell to award the solar panel projects for Somerset Middle School and North Elementary School

Under a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Dominion Energy  has granted $1.6 million to the school district for the solar panel project.

Borrego has estimated that the total savings would be close to $149,423 in utility costs in the first year and $7,393,217 over 30 years assuming 3.76 percent annual rate escalation, For the school district.  The Plan is to install 2,106 solar panels and 15 inverters between the middle school and elementary school.

Out of total three bids Borrego’s proposal is about using more panels, producing more energy and saving more for the school district. Where as other proposals promised saved 35% on electricity costs for the two schools, but going by Boreego’s proposal the savings would be significantly more.

Warranty of 25-years on the solar modules, 10-years on inverters, 20-year on racking and five-years on the system. In addition to annual site inspections and maintenance to assure maximum output, are some of the key features of Borrego’s proposal.

System would be operational in May or June next year. Earlier Borrego has done solar panel projects for public schools in Hopkinton and Plymouth and Harvard University.
