A team made up of Dutch firms MVRDV and Orange Architects has revealed designs for three buildings in Nuvo, a mixed-use project that will be built on a former industrial area in Kyiv.

Nuvo was masterplanned by Poland’s APA Wojcehowski Architects and commissioned by property developer and building materials maker Kovalska before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

MVRDV has designed two office buildings, the larger of which is an 18-storey, L-shaped structure with a public plaza at its heart. The building has a nine-storey atrium, with a cascade of green terraces gracing the façade.

The firm has also designed an 11-storey building that will have wraparound terraces connected with external staircases.

Orange Architects’ contribution is a 36,000 sq m structure that will contain offices, a hotel and residential space with a mobility hub at its base. The building contains two grid sizes, allowing for prefabricated construction, and the façade has solar panels and verandas.

Jacob van Rijs, MVRDV’s founding partner, said: “In creating flexible and demountable spaces, we have designed spaces that can more easily respond to society’s changing needs and help ameliorate uncertainty brought on by the ongoing conflict.”

Jeroen Schipper, Orange Architects’ founder, said: “We envision the project as a positive example for the rebuilding of Ukraine, with adaptable structures and shared spaces, that can help create new sustainable communities for the future.”
